Tamarindo, Costa Rica - on the edge of Paradise

Tamarindo is located on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste. The town has approximately 2,000 full time residents, and can swell to 5,000 people during the tourist season. The main draws of the town are surfing and eco-tourism.

Tamarindo is a long white sand beach, with excellent waves forming near the mouth of the estuary. There are two main breaks for advanced surfers: Pico Pequeño is a rocky point by the Hotel Tamarindo Diriá. As well there is a river mouth break called El Estero that make for excellent waves. The rest of the beach breaks are perfect for those who are coming to Costa Rica to learn how to surf on their very first Tamarindo surf holiday..

The Leatherback Turtle in Tamarindo

Playa Grande beach is also where the Leatherback Turtle comes to lay their eggs. The leatherbacks are numerous on the beach from the months of November through April. The turtles dig their nests up to one meter deep, lay their eggs and cover the pit with sand, and return once again to the sea. 60 to 90 days later, the leatherback turtle hatchlings hatch and immediately make their way to the water.

Activities and Adventures in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

There are lots of other eco-friendly activities including watching turtles during their nesting season at night, diving, snorkeling, body surfing, zip-lining, estuary trips, horseback riding and fishing. During the December to April period when the water turbidity is low, fishing may be done right from the shore with Jacks, Dorado, Sea Bass and Rooster Fish among possible catches.

Other activities you may enjoy in Tamarindo include sunset cruises, kayaking, diving, horseback riding, going for a canopy tour, volcano and hot spring touring.

In and Around Tamarindo

The international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste is open to international flights. The airport is a 75 minute drive from Tamarindo on newly paved roads.

Scheduled daily bus service to and from San José, as well as surrounding communities, is also available. A paved highway from San José for those who wish to rent a car and explore the unforgettable countryside. Travel from San Jose to Tamarindo typically takes 5 to 6 hours and takes you through beautiful tropical settings.

The town of Tamarindo also has an interesting culture. Enjoy an entertaining nightlife. If you catch an act put on by local musicians, expect a great evening of song and dance.

Following an exciting day on the sand and surf or adventuring inland, relaxing at night in one of Tamirindo's many and varied fantastic restaurants. While enjoying some of the very best food and beverages available, marvel at and drink in the nightly performance of the most magnificent sunsets produced anywhere!
